Enhanced Workflow: The Keyboard
My Macbook Pro is essential to my daily routine. I take it with me to school and work on it all day; I bring it back home in the evening and work on my website stuff. At both places I have custom workstations (ie. a 2nd monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse). At home I use an Apple keyboard; at school I use a Saitek gaming keyboard (trust me, it's great for marathon coding sessions). The problem annoyance has been that the keyboard layouts differ between the two. The default settings for a PC keyboard under OS X is to have the Apple key mapped to the Windows Key and the Alt-key to the Alt-key. Now it sounds logical, but if you take a look at your Apple keyboard, the Apple key is directly to the left of the space bar, and not two over like the Windows key on a regular keyboard. The solution has always been to go to the System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, followed by Modifier Keys. In the drop down (see below) I had to remap the functionality between the Command and Alt keys.
Attention OS X (non-Leopard) users in the same predicament as I was, this is how to fix it. OR you can upgrade to Leopard! Yes, that's right! Leopard automatically remaps the keys for you. I must say, although it only takes seconds to remap the keys yourself, this definitely improves my OS X experience.
