Installing HTTPMail for Leopard Upgraders
As readers of this blog know, accessing Hotmail via Apple Mail using HTTPMail doesn't work. Judging by the amount of hits to this blog, many Leopard users made do with the fix I suggested (see this link for details). However, even I stated that it was only to tide us die-hard Hotmail-Leopard users over until Daniel Parnell was able to update his code to be Leopard compatible.
Well, folks -- that day is here! Daniel has officially released a public version of HTTPMail compatible with Leopard. Click here to download HTTPMail, and click here to visit his blog (and donate for his hard efforts!). That being said, although the software works on Daniel's machine, there are users commenting of strange behaviour.
"Please note that as with any first release with a new version of OS X things may not be as stable as I would like. It works on my machine ;)" (Daniel Parnell, http://blog.danielparnell.com/?p=47)
Judging by the volume of positive comments, MOST people are having success with HTTPMail. I'm certain that Daniel will correct any glitches so that all users are able to enjoy his program. Unfortunately, I'm at a Linux terminal and unable to test HTTPMail -- I need to come up with an excuse to get out of here a bit early...
I'll post an update later this evening after I've had the opportunity to install and play with HTTPMail-Leopard. If there's anything non-Leopard users are curious about, please send me a message through the contact form or via email at admin@leoparduser.com. I will investigate all queries and report on them tonight.
All right, I'm at home ready to install HTTPMail. After downloading the file, I verify the image and perform the installation. Everything seems great until I open up Mail: an inbox for MSN Account shows up but I didn't install anything. After realizing this is from my previous HTTPMail installation (and pre-Leopard upgrade) I check to see if I'm able to retrieve messages. No such luck. I delete the account and proceed according to the PDF instructions included with the download.
I'm not going to go through how to setup an email account in Apple Mail: the instructions with HTTPMail are well done and not worth me competing with.
After the installation your new Hotmail account should show up. Fantastic! Now synchronize and retrieve your messages. For those using MacFreePOPs, there is no syncing accounts, thus all messages are considered new. Check out the pic if you don't believe me.
At this time I think it important to point out some issues/caveats:
- Some users complain of hang-ups while the initial retrieval of messages occurs
- Newer Hotmail accounts will probably need to be upgraded to Plus accounts
- It may randomly crash (as per Daniel)
- Cannot create new folders using Mail
- Cannot move mail messages around
- Synchronization is in its infancy: reading/deleting messages will not occur until the NEXT time HTTPMail synchronizes with your account.
Daniel's previous versions of HTTPMail were bulletproof -- solid coding, reliable, and excellent performance. I'm certain with some time this version will be of the same caliber. Happy Hotmailing!
